Opatowska Gate is one of the main attractions of the Old Town in Sandomierz. It is the only preserved city gate, with a history dating back to the 14th century. Today, it is one of the most popular viewpoints in the city.
Opatowska Gate - history
The history of the Opatowska Gate in Sandomierz dates back to the construction of defensive walls that protected the city on the Vistula River. The fortifications were built during the reign of King Casimir the Great. At that time, there were 4 gates and two wickets (including the famous Needle's Eye - the Dominican wicket) leading to the city. Only this one, the northern gate topped with a Renaissance attic, has survived to our times.

Today (after purchasing an entrance ticket) we can visit the Opatowska Gate and go up to the viewing terrace at its top.
Along the way, at various levels of the tower, you will see small exhibitions presenting various attractions in the area, as well as an interesting exhibition "Film Sandomierz". It turns out that the city "played" not only in the famous TV series "Father Mateusz", but also in many other feature films!

The view that awaits us on the viewing terrace of the Opatowska Gate may disappoint some...
The gate is not high and only slightly rises above the roofs of the Old Town houses. Nevertheless, you can easily spot the most famous landmarks: e.g. the Town Hall, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, Sandomierz Castle, DÅ‚ugosz House, the Dominican monastery with the church of St. Jacek. Have you visited them all yet?
It's a pity that the panorama of the Vistula Valley with the Pepper Mountains to the east of the city is spoiled by its right bank with industrial chimneys... However, there is a chance to take a picture, so as to discreetly omit them:
