Located on Baszta Hill, the reconstructed castle in Muszyna is now one of the town's biggest attractions. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 14th century when it was a key defensive element on the border between Poland and Hungary. It served as the residence of Muszyna's governors, controlling an important trade route along the Poprad River.

Today, the castle attracts tourists with picturesque views from the courtyard and the castle tower, as well as modern amenities that blend harmoniously with the historical elements of the site.

  • The road from the parking lot to the castle is paved.
  • The stairs to the tower are comfortable, wide, and have handrails.

Castle of the Bishops of Krakow

Did you know that Muszyna - a small town in Lesser Poland - was once an independent state with its own judiciary, administration, and army, which lasted for almost 500 years? The Muszyna State, managed by governors on behalf of the bishops of Krakow, enjoyed considerable autonomy. The fortress where we are now was the residence of the bishop's 'Muszyna State' until 1474.

Ruins of the Castle in Muszyna

At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was severely damaged by fire, after which most of the buildings were not rebuilt, significantly reducing its military importance. Over the centuries, the castle fell into ruin, and its walls were used as a source of stone for other constructions.

Reconstruction of the Castle in Muszyna

Recently, the castle underwent significant reconstruction. The work included the addition of the tower, the rebuilding of the courtyard, and the creation of a café and exhibition hall inside the castle. Excavations on the castle hill also confirmed the hypothesis of a Hungarian invasion of the fortress in 1474. Jan Długosz described the surrender of the fortress in Muszyna without a fight, while Hungarian sources described a two-day battle. Within the castle, fragments of weapons, arrowheads, bolts, spears, and armor elements were found.
